Job Opportunity - Forestry Machine Operator Apprentice14/12/2021

Joe Court Forestry Ltd is looking for an enthusiastic individual with a passion for sustainable forestry and a desire to learn everything it takes to drive forestry machinery to become a multi skilled team member to join our growing company.

Job Role - Forest Machine Operator Apprentice

Operating machinery including forwarders, tractors and excavators (depending on existing experience or once suitable experience has been obtained)

Maintenance of all machinery to be carried out to high standard and relevant paperwork to be completed.

A percentage of your time will be dedicated to chainsaw work.  Again, depending on existing experience this may start as hand stacking timber processed by team members then once chainsaw certificate has been obtained, felling and processing timber alongside our hand cutting team.

Working as part of the team on more complex sites, such as roadside ash dieback.  Acting as banksman, preventing public entering the risk zone and ensuring all traffic have obeyed traffic management.

Working alongside team members to service, wash and conduct basic maintenance of machinery when in the yard.

Potential to shadow senior leadership team to gain further insight into woodland management and the commercial side of forestry.

One day a week attendance at Plumpton College on their Forest Operative
Level 2 course. 

Once FMOCs are obtained and skill set has increased the responsibility of this role will develop for example you will have a dedicated machine and will operate that machinery on all relevant sites.

Desired skills

  • Positive self-starter who is conscientious and focused on results.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and willingness to learn how to operate machinery in an autonomous role
  • Punctual person with a proactive and flexible attitude ready to turn their hand to any role.
  • Awareness of the hazards and risks involved in forestry with the ability to perceive risks and abide by all strict health and safety guidelines.
  • Previous forestry and/or machinery operating experience is a bonus but not essential.

Personal qualities

  • Team worker, good communicator, ambitious, passionate about forestry, prompt time keeping, exceptional customer service and hard working.

Desired qualifications

  • Any relevant forestry or arboriculture qualifications are a bonus but not a requirement as full training and certification will be offered
  • Entry level English and maths
  • All FMOCs and qualifications will be obtained by attending Plumpton College one day a week for two years.

Once your apprenticeship has finished there will be an opportunity to become fully employed by Joe Court Forestry Ltd.

One of our key ambitions is to offer all our staff the opportunity to progress and develop their career within the company, including the opportunity to upskill within our operational side or even to move into management and the commercial side if this is of interest.

Things to consider

  • Full UK driving licence
  • Own form of transport – We cover the whole of the South East but are based in Dunsfold, Surrey. This means that some days you will be commuting to site from your home or from our yard
